Unpack Your Bags

logan-2

When you are preparing to go on a trip, you take some time to pack your bags. You think of all the activities you will do and what you need to bring for them. You think about what clothes you will need to pack that fit the weather of your destination. You put it all in place where you want it (or maybe you are like my husband and it’s good as long as it’s in a bag). Then you go on your trip, you come back home, and then what happens to your bag? Do you unpack your bag right away? Chances are if you’ve been on a trip, you’ve been driving, riding, or flying for some time. When you get home, you’re tired. You may just put that bag to the side for a day or two and not attempt to unpack. You may dump out all of the laundry out of it and get your essential things you need for the next day. If you are like me, you are still looking at that suitcase for a while before it ever gets put up.

Sometimes we can be the same way with God’s Word. We may read the Word ourselves or hear a message at church, and we take it home with us. It was important to us, we packed it up to bring it home. But, once we got that message home, once our life continued from that moment, we put it in the corner and didn’t do anything with it?

How often do you hear or read the Word of God, but you don’t unpack it?

God tells us in James chapter 1 verses 22-24: But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

From these few verses we can read that God doesn’t want you to keep those bags packed. He wants you to bring what you read and what you hear into application in your life. If you only hear the Word, but then don’t apply it, you may forget it. God doesn’t want that for you, as He describes in the book of James. When the Scripture is given to you, begin at that moment thinking of how you can apply it in your life, what adjustments do you need to make to line up with the Word, what actions do you need to take. God has much in store for you. He gives you His Word to know and to do. If you’ve been only hearing what God days but not doing much with it, take this day today to says that’s the end of that! Unpack those bags and apply God’s Word everyday in your life. What will you do with what you are hearing?

If you feel God tugging at your heart to be more of a doer and not just a hearer, here is a guided prayer for you:

Father thank you for your Word. Thank you that you have provided it to me to be the guide of my life. Your Word is important to me and I want to be a doer of your Word and not just a hearer. Help me in my weakness of not doing what you would have me to do with your Word. God guide me into action. Use the Holy Spirit to tell me to do your Word even when I’m tired. I thank you for working on me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

May you be blessed and encouraged.
