I think that the hardest time to serve others is when we are going through some emotional damage control. During times like these we don’t see fruit in that many areas of our lives. This makes it even more hard to just keep going. It makes it hard to even keep a smile on some days. I know I have been there. That moment when I found out my first husband was still married, the moment I new I had a miscarriage, when my family member died. I was there. Friend one thing I don’t want is for you stay there in that dead place. Today I want to share with you how to recover.
There is this show called The Walking Dead. It of course is after the zombie apocalypse and people are just trying to survive. There are a couple of main characters who had me thinking about serving others even when there is no visible fruit yet. Now just a disclaimer here I am not saying go watch this show or that it is ok to watch I will let that be a personal conviction. But since so many do I think it is a great visual of how the pruning and fruit bearing process works. Rick the main character is in an environment that cultivates fending for ones self. Yet he consistently is concerned about the group as a whole. People are doing ruthless things all around him and yet he keeps that one thing of surviving in center focus. Ever so often when he drifts his focus off people die. People die in this show faster than the leaves can fall off the trees. No one can blame the guy given the circumstances of humanity because he never sees any fruit for his efforts only more trouble. The christian walk is similar in the fact that we can go through seasons of life where the fruit is hard to see. Seasons that feel like they are only really filled will death, tears, and pain. But I promise you that God is still there. He is still working in your life.
What if our spiritual life was like the walking dead? What if the minute we took our eyes off Jesus and serving others people started to die? I mean isn’t that what happens. The very moment we are distracted from our relationship with Jesus that once flame of passion reduces down to a barely lit ember. It is even hard to remember joy in times like these. When our flame goes out because we forget why we are here it begins effecting everyone else around us. Those who we were suppose to encourage remain defeated. People who could have had healing go on hurting. We could have had purpose and passion but end up settling for a life filled with meaningless nothing. I don’t want this to be you. If your hurting today please don’t give up. Don’t give up on your ministry. Don’t give up on your kids. Don’t give up on your family or your spouse. Most of all don’t give up on God. He has not left you. He is still there. He is still good. Stay focused. Though emotionally you may feel like someone off of the walking dead your life isn’t over. Your joy won’t remain gone for ever. Today is the day you start to get it back. How? By remembering the God of your salvation. Your creator. You’re not a zombie. The apocalypse hasn’t happened ( not yet anyway- joke) Your life is not over. What you have been through and experienced will bring you to a place to where you can help others. Do not let what you have went through be wasted. It is time to get focused and be who you were meant to be. The one thing you have to do in order to recover from the emotional pain of feeling dead is to rejoice in the God of your salvation. Not because you feel it but because you choose it.
Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.
– Habakuk 3:17-18
Pray this today:
I know you have promised me emotional healing. Today i choose to believe that you are working for my good. Please don’t let my hurt go to waste. Send someone in my path for me to help and encourage toward you. Bring dead hearts back to life. Please light that flame inside me so that I may spread your love like wild fire. In Jesus Name Amen.
