“The judgement of God is the reaping which comes from sowing, and is evidence of the love of God, not proof of his wrath.”- Kirby Page
My whole life I dated and ended up in relationships with playboys. You know the kind that say all the right things and tell you whatever you want to hear but in actuality they are probably the ones who care about you least in the relationship world. This all changed for me when I met my husband. He is very much the opposite, very matter of fact and honest to a fault. So as you can imagine I really struggled with feeling the depth of his love because all of my past experiences had developed what I thought love should look like. Warped or not I had it in my head that people who loved you agreed with you a lot. I thought that truth was more relative than factual. So I would get passionately offended every time he spoke up with some kind of truth that went against how I felt or what I believed. It was like every opinion different from mine was a jab to the heart. Then one day in prayer God showed me this:
“Little children, let us not love in word only, neither with the tongue only, but in deed … condemn us in known sin, or the neglect of known duty, God does so too.” 1 John 3:18
“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Ephesians 4:15
“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” 1 Corinthians 11:3
“Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.” Psalm 32:2
Now I am not saying my husband or anyone else is always right or even always speaking truth but what I am saying is that true love doesn’t always just give you flattery. True love speaks truth whether it is truth about feelings, truth about opinions, or truth about God’s word in a loving way.
It doesn’t do our deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9) heart any good to tell it more lies. You can always tell if someone loves you by how they act not so much with their words. God loves us but he still is truth, he still tells us right from wrong.
May you be blessed and encouraged.
