A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger– Proverbs 15:18 NIV.
Often times, when my anger emerges, it emerges with words. I rarely ever am angry without some action with it. Often times I will react before thinking about how God would have me handle a situation. I react without consulting Him for guidance. I react, instead of waiting, instead of having patience in the situation. If you find yourself becoming angry quickly, I challenge you to put off the anger and put on patience.
When I get angry, it’s usually because someone has done something that I think they shouldn’t have done. Instead of looking at them in the way Jesus would, I react with harsh words and anger. Sometimes the harsh words are only in my mind, but nevertheless are being said. Jesus would look at everyone as they are a sinner. If we could really grasp that and realize that we are also included in the sinner category, it makes the way we feel when someone does something against us less hurtful. We can then look at them as the same as us, someone who messed up, someone who needs forgiveness, someone who needs the help of the Lord. If we can look at others the way Jesus does, we have patience with them instead of instant anger.
Patience is something that God has had a lot of with you. Think about the times when He could’ve been angry, shown His wrath, took you out the world, but He instead showed patience with you and gave you the chance to repent. We should be the same. To be more Christ-like includes being patient instead of instantly angry. In Galatians chapter 5 verses 19 and 22 (NLT) tells us that by following our desires and sinful nature, one of the results is outbursts of anger and in then it goes on to say the Holy Spirit produces patience in you. So I encourage you today to put off that anger which belongs to the old you, and put on the patience that God calls you to.
Prayer for today: Father thank you for making me a new creation. Lord forgive me when I sin in my anger. Thank you for working on me through the Holy Sprit to produce patience and not anger. Lord help me put off my anger and put on patience. Lord I need your help in doing this. Guide me and shape me into who you have called me to be. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
May you be blessed and encouraged.
