Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. 1 Timothy 6:6-7 NLT.
In the culture we live in, the world tells us to want more and more. Often times we measure our own worth by what we have in our house, what’s parked in our driveways, and the name on our tags. We spend most of our time working and working at a job to make more money to get more stuff. But God would have us to put off that longing for material things and put on contentment with what we have. So, on day 6 of our 30 Day Put On, Put Off Challenge, will you take on the challenge to put off longing and put on contentment and see how it changes your life?
We all seem to want nice things, provide our kids with what we didn’t have growing up, eat what we want to when we want to. But most of the time we forget the Provider. We forget who gives us what we have and who is in control of what we get and when we get it. Everything given to you is given from God according to Romans 11:36 NLT. But that verse says more that we often don’t think about. The verse not only says everything comes from Him and exists by His power, it says it is intended for His glory! When we can realize that the things we have aren’t even for our own desires but to be used to glorify God, I think it can help us to be content. He has given you what He says you need to glorify Him.
Is your purpose to get what you want or to glorify God Almighty?
When we spend our time longing for more and more and striving to see how much we can accumulate, are we glorifying God? Is it glorifying to God to seek after what you want instead of reaching out to help others? Is it glorifying to Him to spend time chasing money instead of being with your family to lead them in a Godly way? Is it glorifying to Him to see how much we can get when 1 Timothy 6:6-7 says we can’t take it with us anyway and so we should be content?
Can we switch off what the world says and hear what God says? You CAN, so the question is will you?
Well, that’s your challenge. To be content and have God call you wealthy for it. To have your heart desire what God wants you to be content with. To put off your longing and put on the contentment God calls you to so you can be wealthy in His kingdom and more like Christ our Savior.
Prayer for today: Father thank you for what you have graciously given me. Father forgive me when I think I should have more and when I strive to get what I desire without thinking about using what I have to your glory. Father I ask that you inspect my heart and show me where I am not being content. Help me to put off my longing and put on the contentment you call me to have. Father help me to desire what you desire for me. Thank you for continuing your work in me everyday to make me be more like Christ. It is in your Son Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
May you be blessed and encouraged.
